Bella and Roxy, pictured here, fulfil two roles for their owners. Firstly and foremost, they are companions, members of the family, but like all of us, their owners want to feel safe in their own home, and Bella and Roxy go a long way to ensuring that. We have all heard the saying, “There is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners”. If only it were as simple as that. How many of us would have passed our driving test without any lessons? Not many I suspect. Good dog ownership is the same, whether it be seeking advice from a family member, reading a book, or seeking professional advice. It is this willingness to further one’s knowledge of our canine companions, in order to improve the lifestyle of the dog, oneself, and our neighbours, that defines a good owner.
Medical problems can often be mistaken for behavioural issues. If your dog develops a problem behaviour quite suddenly, or he has not been to the vets for some time, I strongly advise you to allow a veterinary practitioner to negate any medical problems prior to commencing a behavioural modification programme.
